The History of Qaitbay Citadel
Qaitbay citadel is built on the ruins of one of the Seven Wonders of the World and one of the biggest citadels in Egypt which built in 15th century by Sultan Al-Ashraf Abu Alnasr Qaitbay in 884 Hijri instead of Alexandria lighthouse which destroyed by an earthquake in 702 Hijri. and Qansoh al-Ghuri took care of the castle cause of the threats to Egypt by Ottoman Empire, so he increases its importance and shipping it with weapons to be a defensive fort in the Mamluk era and the Ottoman era.
The Geographical Location of Qaitbay Citadel
Qaitbay citadel located on the north side of Rasheed. and the north side of Pharos island. in Al-Anfoushi district at the outlet of the eastern port Overlooking on Mediterranean Coast.
The Internal Configuration of Qaitbay Citadel
Extends area of seventeen thousand and five hundred and fifty meters, it takes square shape hits an area about 150 meter*130 meter, it looks like peninsula because it’s surrounded by the Mediterranean sea from three sides. contains walls and the main tower, the walls divided into two sections:
The first section includes soldiers barracks and weapons stores.
The second section or the outer walls are about four defensive towers.
The main tower takes a citadel shape and Square-shaped side length 30 meters and height 17 meters.
The Citadel Consists of Three Floors
The first floor is a big mosque and it’s consists of a dish, four Iwans and a defensive passageway that allows soldiers to pass through.
The second floor is octagon and contains corridors, halls, and interior.
The third floor is circular, contains a large room (seat of Sultan Qayat Bay) where he sits to see the ships which pass from the Mediterranean sea. this floor covered by a vault and there is a kiln to prepare bread which made from wheat and a grinding mill for the soldiers who live in the castle.
The Most Famous Users of the Castle
Qaitbay citadel is the most important fort in Alexandria, so the rulers of Egypt cared about it throughout the ages.
-In the Mamluk Period, Qansoh Al-Ghuri Increased the strength of its protector and shipped with arms and gear.
-When Ottomans opened Egypt in 1517 they used this Citedal as a fort to protect them from three centuries.
Then the French campaign was able to seize it in 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte came with 50,000 soldiers to seize Alexandria and seized the castle.
-In the 19th century, Muhammad Ali worked for fortifying Egypt so he renewed the walls of the castle while he was ruling Egypt. Because the walls were completely damaged by the British Naval bombardment.
