Meru Cemetery - Egypt Tours Portal

The northern and southern chambers of Amun were opened and restored on the upper terrace of the Temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahri and the tomb of Meru in the northern El-Asasif necropolis. The temple of Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari on the western side of Luxor was considered the main temple Queen Hatshepsut ruled Egypt during the 18th Dynasty (about 1473-1458 BC). As for the North Al-Asasif cemetery, it was a cemetery where the most prominent officials in Egypt from the Middle Kingdom era (2055-1773) BC were buried.

The two chambers that were opened in the Deir el-Bahari temple surround the main shrine of the god Amun-Ra. Studying the inscriptions on the walls of the southern room began in 2017 which showed that the primary function of the rooms was to store and protect the linen and aromatic materials used during very important religious rituals. There is a marvelous scene that depicts the engineer Senmut found across the doors of both rooms who is the most brilliant of the Queen’s court Hatshepsut, with writings showcasing that the queen has allowed Senmut name’s to be written across all the rooms of her fabulous rooms.

One of the tombs belong to belonged to a person called Meru who was a high-ranking official in the court of King Mentuhott II (2055-2004 BC), founder of the Middle Kingdom, and it is a tomb carved into a rocky cliff called North El-Asasif, which is a continuation of the rock amphitheater at Deir el-Bahari.

This tomb is the first archaeological site from this early period on the western mainland of Luxor to be made available to visitors. The Meru tomb is located facing the procession road leading to the temple of King Mentuhotep II. It is made up of an incredible façade and an epic corridor that lead to an offering compartment with a marvelous niche for putting the statue of the deceased. At the end is a burial chamber that contains a coffin and a well-decorated burial wall. This incredible room is the only one decorated in the whole tomb where the walls hold the most uniquely decorated painting which is carried out with astonishing paint on an epic base of limestone gypsum.
