The glorious Saqqara step pyramid is the world’s first large-scale stone monument and the true beginning of Egypt’s pyramid age. Designed by the visionary architect Imhotep for Pharaoh Djoser (c. 2670–2650 BCE), its six-step structure, surrounded by vast ceremonial courts and ritual buildings, transformed earlier mastaba tombs into a revolutionary new form. This pioneering complex laid the architectural foundations that would ultimately lead to the smooth-sided pyramids at Giza.

In the evening, you’ll be transferred to Cairo International Airport for your flight to Aswan. Upon arrival in Upper Egypt, you’ll be welcomed and escorted to your 5-star hotel for check-in, where you can relax and rest, ready for the extraordinary discoveries that await you the next day.

The Aswan High Dam is the city’s defining modern monument and a turning point in Egypt’s recent history. Constructed between 1960 and 1970 in collaboration with the Moscow-based Hydroproject Institute, the dam was designed to control the Nile’s annual floods, protect fertile lands, and guarantee a steady water supply for irrigation. It also created the vast man-made reservoir known as Lake Nasser and became a key source of hydroelectric power, fueling Egypt’s industrial growth and illuminating millions of homes across the country.

You will then pause to enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, where you can relax and sample regional flavors before continuing your exploration of Aswan’s ancient wonders.

The Unfinished Obelisk lies in Aswan’s ancient granite quarries and feels like a colossal time capsule left mid-creation. Commissioned by Queen Hatshepsut (1508–1458 BC) and intended to stand at the entrance of Karnak Temple, this monolith—known as Tekhenu, “to pierce the sky”—reveals the precise techniques used by ancient craftsmen. Still attached to the bedrock, it shows chisel marks and working traces that explain how obelisks were carved directly from the stone. Had it been completed, it would have reached a height of about 42 meters and weighed nearly 1,200 tons, making it the largest obelisk ever attempted in ancient Egypt.
 

Philae Temple a.k.a the “jewel of Aswan,” is one of Egypt’s most enchanting sanctuaries. Temple of Kom Ombo, poetically known as “The Hill of Gold,” rises on a graceful bend of the Nile between Edfu and Aswan. It was created during the Greco-Roman period between 205 and 180 BC. This remarkable sanctuary is unlike any other in Egypt: it is a perfectly symmetrical double temple, mirrored along a central axis. One side is devoted to Sobek, the crocodile god associated with fertility and protection, while the other honors Horus the Elder, the falcon sky god. Twin entrances, halls, and sanctuaries reflect this dual dedication, and its walls are adorned with finely carved reliefs including rare scenes of ancient surgical tools, while the nearby Crocodile Museum displays mummified sacred crocodiles that once honored Sobek himself.

The Temple of Edfu is a magnificent sanctuary dedicated to Horus, the falcon god of protection and divine kingship, and is widely regarded as one of the best-preserved temples in all of Egypt. It was constructed during the Ptolemaic era between 237 BC and 57 BC. It beautifully blends traditional pharaonic temple design with subtle Greek architectural influences. Its towering pylons, grand courtyard, hypostyle halls, and sanctuary still retain clear reliefs that recount the mythic battle between Horus and Seth, coronation rituals, and sacred festivals. The Colossi of Memnon stand like ancient sentinels on Luxor’s West Bank, two towering statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, carved in the 14th century BC to guard the entrance of his once-vast mortuary temple. Each colossus rises about 18 meters high, hewn from quartzite sandstone transported from quarries near Cairo. In antiquity, one statue became legendary for emitting mysterious “singing” or whistling sounds at dawn, likely caused by temperature changes and cracks in the stone, drawing visitors and Roman emperors who came to hear its ghostly voice.

The Hippodrome is a marvelous relic of great magnificence that was built in 203 AD by Emperor Septimius Severus and later enlarged by Constantine the Great. It formed the vibrant political and social center of Byzantine Constantinople. It was capable of seating up to 100,000 spectators, and it hosted chariot races, imperial ceremonies, and major public events. The area known as Sultanahmet Square preserves key monuments from this grand arena, including the Obelisk of Theodosius (originally erected by Thutmose III at Karnak), the Serpentine Column, and the Walled Obelisk, all of which stand as enduring reminders of imperial prominence and civic vitality.

Uchisar Castle is a natural gem that was carved from soft volcanic tuff, which has dominated Cappadocia’s skyline since Roman times and offers some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the region. It served as a key defensive stronghold and was further expanded during the Byzantine and Seljuk periods (12th–13th centuries), reinforcing its strategic importance over the centuries.

Göreme Open-Air Museum is a divine creation, which is known to be a 10th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site, for its number of rock-cut churches and monastic dwellings that preserve some of the finest examples of early Christian art. Its vividly painted frescoes depict biblical scenes and Christian symbols, with the Dark Church renowned for its remarkably intact wall paintings and the Apple Church offering an intimate glimpse into the spiritual life of Byzantine-era monks.

Avanos is a charming town along the Red River (Kizilirmak) that holds the oldest river in Anatolia and has been Cappadocia’s pottery capital since the Hittite era around 2000 BC.
