Qaitbey Citadel is a beautiful memory from ancient times that holds the immortal illuminating spirit of the Alexandria Lighthouse. It was constructed in 1477 by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf Al-din Qa'it Bay on the same site that held the legendary lighthouse of Alexandria, using the stones salvaged from the wrecked lighthouse that served as the third longest surviving ancient wonder until its destruction by a series of earthquakes between 956 AD and 1323 AD. The Cairo Citadel became the headquarters of the government for more than 700 years; inside the citadel lie some museums and beautiful buildings.
Mohamed Ali Mosque is known as the alabaster mosque due to its unique design and the extensive use of marble. It was built between 1830 and 1848 AD to be a replica of the blue mosque in Istanbul, so it can be seen as a symbol of independence and freedom against the Ottoman Empire. The mosque is truly captivating with its Ottoman style, the architecture of French Rococo with enchanting finishes of ornate red, green, and gold, and a great, enchanting dome. It contains an ornate brass clock, a gift from King Louis Philippe of France to Muhammad Ali in 1845 in exchange for an obelisk that stands in Concorde Square in Paris.
