The Abu Simbel temples lay in the south of the county about 230 km southwest of the enchanting city of Aswan lays. One of the temples is dedicated to the great king Ramses II (1303-1213) and the second temple is for his beloved wife Queen Nefertari. It was constructed by Ramses II between 1290 and 1224 BC in order to immortalize his legacy for eternity. The temple has a massive statue of Ramses reaching the height of 108 Ft at the entrance that fills the mind and soul with greatness and excitement and inside the temple is the great grand hall and deep in the temple lays the magical hypostyle hall containing hypnotic images from the battle of Kadesh in 1279 BC and the central chamber that houses four great rock-cut seated statues of Ra-Horakhty, the gods Amun & Ptah and the deified king Ramses. What is The Sun Festival?
During all year long the temple stays in utter darkness except for two specific days which are 22 of February & October of each year where the sun festival takes place. The sun festival happens when the sun rays illuminate the central chamber and the light is perfectly cast on the faces of the four seated statues of, Ptah (God of creation), Amun (The God of Gods), Ra-Horakhty (The Sun God) and Ramses II.
