The process of construction had begun in 1869 AD and was completed by 1911 AD. However, the works of its erection stopped for around 25 years from 1880 to 1905 AD. The mosque served as the burial tombs of Mohamed Ali's family members.
Ibn Tulun Mosque is the oldest and largest mosque in Cairo which was established between 876 and 879 AD by Ahmed Ibn Tulun who was commissioned by the Abbasid Caliph to be the governor of Al Fustat.
